Ottawa University student Alexandre Roy won a Kindle E-Reader after participating in a survey about study in the U.S. sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa and EducationUSA Canada at a recent university education fair. What Alexandre didn’t know was that the U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson would award him the prize. Alexandre, a second year Kinetics major at Ottawa University, is considering pursuing a further degree in the United States.
We invited Alexandre in early January to come to the Embassy to receive the Kindle from the U.S. Ambassador. He arrived early at the Embassy and was escorted to the Ambassador's office where we chatted about education and Alexandre’s interest in studying in the United States. Then, in front of the U.S. and Canadian flags, Ambassador Jacobson presented awarded Alexandre with the Kindle, as well as a U.S. Embassy hockey puck and a special Ambassadorial challenge coin.
Alexandre later said it was one of the "coolest things" he has ever done. "...I won a Kindle Tablet by filling out a survey, and to my surprise I got to meet the Ambassador himself!" Of his conversation with the Ambassador he said, “He also gave me a new perspective much different from my own. That the Ambassador to Canada took time out of his day to spend some time with an average university student like me was incredible. He welcomed me with an open hand and a warm smile. We are incredibly lucky to have relations with America in the way that we do."
